The Challenge
Picky Bars needed a comprehensive upgrade of their digital platform to better support their subscription service, enhance user experience, and provide dynamic discounting options for their loyal customers. They required a migration to Shopify Plus along with a custom-built subscription management system using Recharge.
The challenge was to maintain customer satisfaction while integrating new features that allowed users greater flexibility in managing their subscriptions, including dynamic discounting and personalized product bundles.

What We Did
Our scope of work for Picky Bars included the following key services:

Custom UI/UX Design Changes
We made modifications to the user interface design of the subscription creation page and the My Account page to match the visual mock-ups provided by Picky Bars. This included adding a 'Your Club Box' section that dynamically pulled information from the user’s order and displayed a motivator bar to show how far customers were from reaching the next discount level.

Recharge Integration and API Development
We handled the API integration with the Recharge Recurring Billing platform to provide a dynamic pricing-based discount structure for the Picky Club. The existing item-quantity-based discount structure was replaced with a dynamic discount model, providing customers with automatic discounts based on their total subscription value. The discount tiers, such as 10%, 20%, and 30%, were automatically applied based on the customer’s total subscription amount. We ensured that changes made by customers in their subscriptions were seamlessly reflected without creating any additional complexity for the end user.

Subscription Flexibility and Customer Portal
Our team developed a custom subscription management portal where customers could manage their subscriptions effortlessly. This included functionalities such as changing subscription items, skipping months, or updating their subscriptions with new products. Unlike the previous system, where each product had to be managed as a separate subscription, our integration enabled a dynamic, bundled subscription that allowed users to adjust their products and discounts based on changes in their total subscription value.
Dynamic Discounting
We implemented a dynamic discounting system for the Picky Club, enabling Picky Bars to introduce new products at different price points without having to redo their discounting setup. Customers could see a motivator bar on their account page, indicating how close they were to the next discount tier, which encouraged increased order value.
Integration with Recharge API for Subscription Automation
We connected directly with Recharge’s API to allow for automated updates whenever customers made changes to their subscriptions that impacted pricing. All customer notifications related to subscription changes were disabled, ensuring a seamless transition to new subscription values without requiring any action from the customer. This integration also allowed customers to make changes without dropping below a monthly minimum value, maintaining subscription stability.
Collaboration and Division of Labor
We collaborated closely with Picky Bars’ existing development team to define roles and responsibilities clearly. Their developer handled the Shopify theme development and content migration, while we managed Recharge setup, My Account page development, API integrations, and data migration. This ensured a coordinated and efficient workflow, leading to a smooth and successful transition.
