The Challenge
Pipsticks needed to migrate their ecommerce operations from Cratejoy to Shopify Plus to better support their subscription business and enhance their overall online store experience. The migration presented several challenges, including moving complex subscription data, transferring product listings, and maintaining customer engagement during the transition.
Key requirements also included integrating Recharge for subscription management, setting up wholesale functionality, and ensuring a seamless customer experience during and after migration. Additionally, Pipsticks wanted to adjust their billing model, transitioning from monthly billing to a more flexible system.

What We Did
Our scope of work for Pipsticks included the following key services:

Data and Subscription Migration
We managed the migration of all product listings, customer accounts, and subscription data from Cratejoy to Shopify Plus. The migration involved handling complex data sets to ensure data accuracy and consistency throughout the process. Additionally, we handled promo code data, gift cards, and implemented 301 redirects to maintain SEO performance during the transition.

Recharge Integration and Subscription Management
We handled the complete setup of Recharge, including API integration for subscription management. Our team developed a custom 'My Account' page that allowed customers to manage their subscriptions seamlessly, including updating payment methods, skipping shipments, and gifting subscriptions. We also collaborated with Recharge to secure a six-month free trial and a reduced rate for Pipsticks, helping reduce costs during the transition.

Custom Development Work
We worked on developing custom subscription functionalities to enhance Pipsticks’ customer experience. This included creating a customer portal, developing specific customer flows for existing subscribers, and building a custom login page. Our development work also involved integrating subscription options on the product page template, enabling customers to easily subscribe to individual products.
Wholesale Setup and B2B Support
To support Pipsticks’ wholesale operations, we provided theme recommendations and helped implement wholesale features that would enable bulk purchasing. This functionality was prioritized for completion by mid-January to meet Pipsticks’ timeline requirements, ensuring that their wholesale capabilities were ready in time for their sales cycle.
Division of Labor with Current Developer
We coordinated with Pipsticks’ current developer to establish a clear division of labor. While their developer handled Shopify theme development, store settings setup, and page content migration, we focused on setting up Recharge, developing the My Account page, API integrations, and handling data migrations. This collaboration ensured that both teams worked efficiently and without overlap, leading to a smooth transition to Shopify Plus.
Billing Model Adjustment
Pipsticks wanted to adjust their billing model, which previously involved ad hoc billing and monthly shipping. We worked with the Pipsticks team to modify their billing setup, allowing them to change the billing date and provide more flexibility for customers, improving their subscription experience.

The Result
With over 5 custom solutions developed, including a personalized customer portal and optimized subscription flows and negotiated a 6-month free Recharge trial and reduced rates, cutting costs during the transition, we supported Pipsticks in ways beyond any agency.


The migration to Shopify Plus has transformed our business. The new platform not only improved our subscription management but also made it easier for our customers to engage with us. The team's expertise and dedication were crucial in making this a smooth transition!
